Dream Chasers
No After Effects work here. SportsHD needed a demo/trailer/style-example-thingy to send to ESPN about a HS Basketball show they’re pitching. There were five hours of really really shitty one-chip camcorder bullshit I was stuck with. Hmmmmm. Sounded like a challenge.
I think the final demo is going to have some VO or something. I’m not sure so I just posted up a copy of what I was happy with. I’m sure The Brass will change it anyway.
The QT movie is at the bottom of this page.

Due to compression, the still photos I posted are more indicative of the actual quality. It’s not quite that shitty, but this footage sure was a far cry from my normal HD gigs. All of the compositing and color correction were done in FCP. Every effect was keyframed (NO special filters or plugins) and a vast majority of composite modes were utilized.

Here’s a side-by-side still comparison of the original footage vs. my affected footage.
First, I deinterlaced all the footage and created a non-field dominant timeline. Then came basic edit, color correction, layer composite stacking, re-editing, re-editing, manual moves/pans/blowups/swishes/color ramping/reverses/rotations, and lots of keyframes. This whole sequence took about eight hours.

There’s a hierarchy and a system here, folks. Editing is part science. Its part rythmic. I like my timelines clean.

The funniest thing about this project is that I used the exact same royalty-free music as I did over at HDNet for a Boyz in the Hood promo. HDNet and SportsHD both have similar music libraries and for that hippidy-hoppidy stuff…well…it’s all terrible. Out of 30,000 songs - there’s one passable “Rap” track, and I’ve used it - TWICE NOW!
Hey Josh,
dense, complex, highly rythmic… you definately brought it to life! was he pleased?…any chance of getting a higher rez version of that FC screenshot? I’m still learning FCP…would be useful to see how you did things…

[...] I just posted a new iPOD video to the SportsHD server featuring the FCP compositing and effects work mentioned in a previous post. [...]

Wow, way to take something shitty and make it workable. I really like what you did with it.

Really nice work here.
“…created a non-field dominant timeline”
I did this recently and is saved my ass. I had a real bad looking interlaced credit scroll that no deinterlacing was going to help so I reset my timeline for “none”. Wasn’t the greatest but definitely improved the overall look of the scroll and got rid of the wavy shimmer-look.
Cool blog. Keep up the good work.

Finally got around to reading your blog. Think I got here from HDforindies but I don’t remember. I just clicked your link tonight for some reason. I think I thought it was something else. lol. Anyway, you are definitely my kindred spirit. They call me The SaveMan here in NYC for exactly the same reason. Lotz of shit turned to gold. Wait til you deal with “rap” cats. They have no imagination. Copy, copy, copy…and don’t get me started on the film schoolers. They been hating me since ‘01 when I told them I ain’t go to film school either, I just used to make beats and sling beer. And yeah it was only my first 3 months of editing and why you mad I cut better than your $160,000 MFA ass???. I got a lotta Hollywood friends…but I ain’t gonna snitch on them.
