Excerpts From a Novel, Tall Omaha
Excerpt A.)
Real LSD, by the way, is very hard to come by. It takes a bonafide chemist to synthesize the drug, and though Max was heavily connected and could get some great acid, tonight’s lot was merely fancy perforated paper with hoofpick inkblots. Considering tall kid was alone and possibly depressed in his quest for adventure, a non-effective acid trip was just the sort of excitement (and safety) that he needed.
Max smiled as she left the scene, climbed into her rusted out Civic, and drove home. On her way back to the state highway, she didn’t even so much as pause for the dude on the Chevy Nova. She knew it would be a while before she was back at this sales location.
Excerpt B.)
For a few minutes, Max starred off into space. She fell backwards into her chair, less sitting in it than dropped in its place. Her shoulders slumped as she let out a yawn, green eyes slowly closing as her face relaxed onto her cheekbones.
In these moments, the city outside seemed large and hostile. Gunshots and city sirens crept in through the thin apartment windows, robberies and homicides of otherwise well adjusted citizens made more apparent by the lack of trash removal from underneath her bathroom window. In the alley below, pushers mixed with pimps, but it was only the denizens from the suburbs who called the area “badâ€. In this neighborhood, every crime victim was a trespasser on local turf; neighbor’s car rims left untouched in favor of an outsider’s hubcaps, overpriced street deals going down in visiting BMW’s, not locals late models.
The crack dealers down the corner never bothered Max, not even once. All times of night she could be out walking for a loaf of bread from the convince store, and only when a local fraternity ventured a little too far off campus did she have any altercation with the opposite sex. In that instance, it was the Brothers who saved her from harm, preppy boys intercepted and left with broken mouths by a group of hoods looking out for “that girl with the animalsâ€.
“Keds! What are you chasing?â€
Keds, too, was a rescued kitten, found hidden in a shoe box while Max was dumping her recycling. Even before he could see, the little guy conveyed a trusting persona, jumping into Max’s hands immediately after startling her half to death.
“Here, let me get your feather. Try not to destroy the glued hook in less than three minutes like the last one. These things aren’t cheap, dude.â€
